Mississippi State University participates in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE, pronounced Nessie) each spring. This instrument asks students how they spend their time and use MSU resources. Our results are compared to our SEC and other Land-Grant peers across the nation.
The NSSE web site defines student engagement as follows: "Student engagement represents two critical features of collegiate quality. The first is the amount of time and effort students put into their studies and other educationally purposeful activities. The second is how the institution deploys its resources and organizes the curriculum and other learning opportunities to get students to participate in activities that decades of research studies show are linked to student learning."
Eligible first-year and senior students were sent survey invitations and a link appears in their myState portal that connects to the survey. If you do not have this link in your myState portal or you don't have an email invitation, then chances are that you are not eligible this year, but you will be in the future. For spring 2020, 3,830 first-years and 5,175 seniors were emailed survey invitations.
In appreciation for participating, those who complete the survey will be entered to win 1 of 3 $25 Amazon gift cards. Six drawings will be held. Those who respond by the drawing date but don't win a prize will be entered in subsequent drawings. So the earlier you complete the survey, the more chances you have to win a gift card. Your chances of winning depend on how many complete the survey. In 2019, 1,500 students completed the survey.
